Commodity ETFs the losers on the JSE in 2023

Last week we covered the list of winning ETFs on the JSE for 2023, and it’s a wildly impressive list. We also have the five-year and ten-year total returns with more impressive numbers.

This week we’re looking at the losing ETFs on the JSE, and boy is it a small list. Thirteen, that’s it. Just thirteen. The data is year-to-date to close 11 December 2023 and is total, so includes dividends received.

Top of the loser pile is Rhodium as the white metal had a horror year but it’s still given 15% annualised over the last five years.

Commodities dominate this list with palladium coming in next, then the Satrix Resi10 off 21% but 11.7% annualised over the last five years. Platinum also on the list, there was nowhere to hide in resources, expect for gold.

The Satrix Shari’ah ETF comes in next with the Satrix Divi down almost 14% this year. The challenge here is that some of the high dividend payers such as Thungela had a horror year losing almost half it’s value with a weighting in the ETF of almost 7% while Implats down over 60% is also almost 7% in this ETF.

The two China ETFs from Satrix and Sygnia also had a red year, but less than 6% down, so not a disaster.
