Ten year total returns for JSE ETFs; bonds and cash

Simon BrownETF Blog, Latest

A few weeks ago we published a list of total returns for JSE listed ETFs over the last five years. The logic being that we’re long-term investors and as such shorter time frame moves really aren’t of concern.

A lot of you then asked what about even longer time frames and today we have the data over the last ten years.

The trick here is two-fold. Not many locally listed ETFs have a ten-year track record. Secondly some such as the Sygnia Itrix have been around for ten plus years, but my data provider only has the data from when Sygnia took over the ETFs from Deutsche Bank in 2017, not from listing in 2009.

The list is short at only twenty-five ETFs and top is bonds followed by cash! Geez to think of all the nasty things I said about bonds back in the day.

Also, the ten year returns are total return (so includes dividends) and we show both annualised and total return for the period.

Further all have positive returns but that shouldn’t be a surprise ten years is a long time. Local inflation over the last decade has been  ±5.1%, so most beat inflation which is an important first step. It’s also worth noting that these returns are after fund fees as the issuer takes their fee out of the dividend when paid.
