Is the Gold Collapse Over?

Simon BrownLatest, WorldWide Markets

๐ŸŒ Worldwide Markets โ€“ Episode 664

๐Ÿ“… Recorded: Tuesday midday | ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Host: Simon Brown

This week on Worldwide Markets, we unpack a wild ride across commodities, central banks, tech titans, and global trade โ€” with gold stealing the spotlight once again.

๐ŸŸก Has Gold Bottomed?

Gold went vertical โ€” and then snapped back hard.

  • ๐Ÿ“ˆ Ran from around $4,300 โ†’ $5,600, before a brutal sell-off
  • ๐Ÿ“‰ Dropped to $4,600, now stabilising near $4,900
  • ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ That giant red โ€œkangaroo tailโ€ candle looks ugly โ€” butโ€ฆ

The bigger picture hasnโ€™t changed:

  • ๐Ÿ’ต Debasement trade still intact
  • ๐ŸŒ Central banks bought ~800 tonnes last year
  • ๐Ÿฆ ETF investors were big buyers again after selling in 2024

โžก๏ธ Verdict: Likely consolidation, not collapse. Sideways is the base case.

๐Ÿงฑ Commodities Ran Too Hot

It wasnโ€™t just gold:

  • ๐Ÿ”ฉ Copper, silver, platinum, palladium all surged
  • ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Brent crude nearly hit $70
  • ๐Ÿชจ Aluminium hit US record prices, creating transatlantic arbitrage

Nothing goes straight up forever โ€” profit-taking was inevitable.

๐Ÿช™ What About Silver?

Simon stays honest here:

  • โ“ Industrial demand and price dislocations matter
  • โš ๏ธ But silver remains complex and opaque

๐Ÿ’ก Portfolio stance:

  • โœ… Holding gold miners
  • โœ… Holding gold ETFs (local & offshore)
  • โŒ No silver exposure โ€” and comfortable with that

๐Ÿฆ Fed Drama: Enter Kevin Walsh

Trumpโ€™s Fed chair nominee spooked markets โ€” but context matters:

  • ๐Ÿ”„ Walsh is not a hawk, more a rate flip-flopper
  • ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Previously opposed rate cutsโ€ฆ until Trump won
  • ๐Ÿ“‰ Trump wants lower rates โ€” Walsh says heโ€™ll deliver

The challenge?

  • ๐Ÿง  Convincing the rest of the FOMC
  • ๐Ÿช‘ Jerome Powell still has influence for now

โžก๏ธ Expect noise, not an instant policy pivot.

๐Ÿš€ SpaceX + xAI = Trillion-Dollar IPO?

Big Elon energy this week:

  • ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ SpaceX acquires xAI
  • ๐Ÿง  Grok + data + power + space = big ambitions
  • ๐Ÿ“Š IPO rumoured for mid-2026
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ Valuation likely north of $1 trillion

Simon likes SpaceXโ€ฆ less excited by the social-media side.

๐Ÿš— SA Vehicle Sales: Still Strong

January numbers surprised again:

  • ๐Ÿ“Š Sales near levels last seen in 2019 / early 2022
  • ๐Ÿ† Toyota leads, but Chinese brands keep climbing
  • ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Chery, GWM, JAC & friends reshaping the market

Consumers are still buying โ€” despite high rates.

๐Ÿค USโ€“India Trade โ€œPeaceโ€โ€ฆ Sort Of

A deal was announced, but details are fuzzy:

  • ๐Ÿ“‰ Tariffs reduced (somewhat)
  • ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ India supposedly to stop buying Russian oil (๐Ÿ‘€)
  • ๐Ÿ’ธ India to buy $500bn of US goods (timeline unclear)

History lesson:

  • ๐ŸŒฎ Trump tariff threats turn real only ~20% of the time
  • โš–๏ธ Supreme Court still deciding if Trump even has the authority

โžก๏ธ Lots of headlines, fewer guarantees.

๐ŸŽ“ Upcoming Event: Power Hour

๐Ÿ“… 19 February
๐Ÿ“ Rosebank (in-person) + webcast
๐Ÿ’ก Topic: Tax-Free Investing & ETFs

๐Ÿ‘‰ Book at justonelap.com/events

๐Ÿ‘‹ Closing Thoughts

Markets are noisy, emotional, and fast โ€” but the big-picture trends still matter more than the candles.

Until next week:
๐Ÿค Look after yourself
๐Ÿค And if you can, look after someone else too

Cheers! ๐Ÿป
