Mike Brown from etfSA publishes a report on the Exchange Traded Product (ETP) industry every quarter and the year end report for 2024 just landed and here are some of our highlights.
The market cap of the ETP industry has jumped, helped by new issues and of course a strong markets. But even at R225million this is a small industry with the likes of Coronation having almost that in assets on their own. That said the ETP market cap has tripled in the last decade, so no complaints.
In terms of the number of ETPs we saw ETFs shrink as Satrix closed a few of the ETFs they got when they too over much of the Absa business. Some growth in ETNs and AMCs with Actively Managed ETFs showing the biggest growth and I expected this trend to continue.
In terms of size of the issuers Satrix is way ahead after the Absa acquisition while UBS lets in the AMC space. Actively managed ETFs have seen their numbers grow but market cap remains small for now as investors digest this relatively new product?
The ten largest ETPs are lead by NewGold* and aside from the Satrix and 1nvest Top40* ETFs they’re all referencing either offshore or commodities.
