The local ETF market keeps growing assets and funds

Mike Brown at ETFsa released his quarterly state of the ETF market in South Africa and we’ve reproduced some highlight below.

  • This is for the period ending September 2026.
  • Find your own favourite ETF (active or passive) in our ETF Database.

Key is that total market cap of all listed ETFs (ETFs, active ETFs, ETNs and AMCs) is higher at just over R320billion. But back at the June end quarter this number was R308billion, so modest growth. Modest in a quarter in which the local market was flat, but US and tech sectors are both higher.

I would also add that R320billion is small compared with the local unit trust industry which is almost R6trillion including offshore funds. So the ETP industry is 5% whereas in the US ETFs have more assets than mutual funds (their unit trust equivalent).

The big story (on which we did a recent Power Hour) is the rise of Actively Managed ETF (AMETF) listing. Albeit not always with much assets under pinning the listing.

As we discussed extensively in the Power Hour active ETF seriously lag behind the passive in terms of assets. Passive is 77% of all assets even though it is a little over a quarter of actual funds.

Passive ETF listings actually dropped this as Satrix has been cleaning up their portfolio after the acquisition of the Absa portfolio. This has seen them merge a number of ETFs and even a few from their own stable that haven’t worked at hoped.

The largest issuer, by a long way, remains Satrix.
