First a huge thank you to everybody who responded to our user survey. We got a massive response and as such we have statistically useful data. Below are ten of the highlights and I will do a deeper dive into each with a series of videos on my Twitter account (along with holiday pics) over the next few weeks of holidays.
We also got lots of ideas of what we should do more of and the insights also helped us know you better and know what we should be focusing on.
They will all be incorporated during the course of 2023.
We also did a series of videos digging deeper into the data, you can find them on Twitter and TikTok.
Demographic data is always interesting and we largely track as expected.
Location is split pretty much as per the population; most in Gauteng, then Western Cape followed by KawZulu-Natal.
Age is spread equally but very few are below 25 which is a surprise.
Gender, we skew male but a lot less than we did when we started doing this survey.
Over a third with more than a decade of experience in the market.
Less than a fifth in the last three pandemic years.
The majority say intermediate.
Your broker?
EasyEquities, no surprise with over 750k active accounts. Overall a great spread between brokers.
Almost half have more than one brokerage account while 5% have four or more.
What do you invest in?
The usual suspects, great to see tax-free right up there.
In the other segment, we had a lot of private equity and alternative investments.
For those trading derivatives, we asked, which?
Surprised by the high number who are trading FX.
Your emergency fund
Two thirds said they have an emergency fund, of those two thirds have it fully funded.
How do you get your offshore exposure is still mostly ETFs or ETNs.
Local brokers doing well but offshore brokers definitely picking up over the last few years.
Where do you get your information?
Just One Lap at the top is expected.
Podcasts are definitely for the win, more than I would have guessed.
Print beating TV and radio?
We asked if you subscribed to a tipping service and 12% said yes.
Much higher than I would have thought.
Then crunching the data we find that subscribing to such a service is not just for newbies, people of all experience levels subscribe.
Thanks to Christine for crunching the data and making the images.
