Our presenter for this JSE Power Hour was the Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz), Wandile Sihlobo. Locally, agriculture has had a few great years due to record rainfall boosting crop output. Revenue for the sector has been further enhanced by higher global pricing.
But rising energy costs (fertiliser and diesel) are putting pressure on profits and the Ukrainian war is adding further stress to the system.
Agriculture is first and foremost an important sector as it feeds the nation. But it also benefits our tax revenue and exports and is the base for a large investment sector on the exchange.
Wandile will help deepen our understanding of the sector and the opportunities, current pressure points and risks it faces as well as the recent flooding in eThekwini.
Power Hour
How do you make sense of the financial markets? How do you interpret the latest financial news? Where do you learn how financial instruments work? How can you learn to invest?
The JSE Power Hour started in 2011 with top industry experts presenting to private investors on financial issues closest to their heart. Power Hours were live presentations in Johannesburg, Durban or Cape Town and broadcast online. However, due to Covid-19 the Power Hours now take place virtually.
