Our ETF personality for this month is Nozi van Heerden.
How long have you been investing and what got you started?
I started investing in November 2017, just a little over 5 years ago.
What was the first ETF you bought and why did you buy it?
My first ETF was Ashburton Global 1200 (now FNB Global 1200). I bought it after I listened to the JustOneLap podcast episode titled ‘One ETF to rule them all’. In that episode, Kristia and Simon were talking about which ETF they would buy if they had to choose only one. At the time, it happened to be Ashburton Global 1200. It was the most diverse ETF available, covering companies from 30 developed and developing countries.
How many ETFs do you currently hold?
I currently hold 10 ETFs: 6 in my tax-free, 2 in my US account and 2 in my Australian account.
What’s your favourite local listed ETF, and why?
It is FNB Global 1200. I love it because of its diversification: it covers 500 of the largest companies in the USA, 350 companies in Europe, 150 companies in Japan, 60 companies in Canada, 50 companies in Australia, 50 in Asia, and 40 in Latin America. I also love that it pays dividends 4 times a year and that the fund has returned 10.44% since inception.
What’s your favourite offshore listed ETF(s), and why?
It is VTI (Vanguard U.S. Total Stock Market Index ETF). I love it because just as its name suggests, it covers almost the entire American stock market with more than 4000 companies represented. The New York Stock Exchange is currently the largest and most valuable stock market in the world and it’s home to some of the most recognisable companies like Apple, Coca-Cola, Amazon, Tesla, McDonald’s et cetera. The best way for me to get a piece of the action is to own a piece of almost every company in America by buying VTI.
Do you also hold individual shares?
Yes I do hold individual shares.
What is the percentage split between ETFs and shares in your portfolio?
80% ETFs and 20% shares.
