In April this year etfSA listed Oyster (JSE: OYSTER), an actively managed ETF that gives you up to 100% offshore exposure in a single trade on the JSE. No foreign tax clearance, no offshore brokerage account, no moving rands.

Under the hood it is a fund of global ETFs from iShares, Vanguard and State Street SPDR, held in an 80/20 growth-to-defensive split against a benchmark of MSCI World, MSCI ACWI, MSCI EM and the World Government Bond Index.

The management fee is 0.35% (ex-VAT) while the full TER will be known after the first year of trading.

Nerina Visser, ETF strategist and director at etfSA, joins Simon Brown to explain how the fund is built, what “actively managed” means when the methodology is largely rules-based and fully transparent, where the total cost lands once the underlying ETFs are counted, who this is and is not for, and where it fits in your portfolio
