JSE Power Hour: Twenty years of ETFs

Simon Brown

When

19 November
17 30 - 18 30

The first Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) in South Africa was listed on the JSE on 27 November 2000. It was the Satrix40 and started trading at 774c. Over that time it has paid more in dividends and currently trades at around 4700c – a great investment over the period.

Now with over 70 ETFs and almost as many Exchange Traded Notes (ETNs) the sector has boomed as passive investing has seen a global surge.

Twenty years later this JSE Power Hour will be looking back at how the local industry has grown with commodity and offshore ETFs being added, tax-free investing introduced in 2015 and more recently FNB introduced ETNs over individual tech stocks.
